How To Optimise Your Web Design and Website for the UK Market

Running a website can be difficult but also rewarding. Nothing can be more satisfying than looking through your stat counter or analystics tool and seeing a large targeted audience all visiting your site.

Targeting your audience will, of course, not only be geographical based but will be based on other factors i.e. male/female, age, interests etc...

...but did you know targeting a UK market via the search engines can be different to targeting US target audience (which sometimes US based articles and tools may prove a disadvantage).

Firstly using online keyword tools can prove a problem for UK website owners. You could find your target area, i.e. Essex may be for both UK market (Essex in South East England) and also the US (Essex in Montana USA).

This could mean your keyword suggestions may be based on US based searches and terminology rather than the UK equivilant. So what ways can you try to avoid this problem?

One way is to use the UK Google Adword tool. If you are not familiar with the Google Adword tool take a visit to http://www.google.co.uk/adwords . You can open an account with Google for as little as 5 pounds and then use this tool over a month to determine actual keyword searches. By setting up a Pay Per Click campaign for 10p click for your main keywords you can, over a month, really deem what keywords are popular and which are not. This enables you to develop your website further to take in to consideration the results...plus a very useful tool is Googles Keyword Suggestion (used via the Adwords interface) it help suggest related phrases and keywords people are searching upon - may prove interesting.

A good campaign can be set up for £100 - £300 per month (depending on the number of keywords and level of competition) but this relatively small cost can prove extremely fruitful and ensure your web site is targeting the right keywords and phrases.
