Instant success by improving your Title Tag
Today’s topic is how to help search engines correctly place your website.
If you browse through a bookshop, quickly scanning the spines of the hundreds of books on offer, what generally makes you reach out and grab a book rather than browse straight past it? – normally it is the title.
The same thing applies with your website. Your title is one of the most important and relevant items (that you have complete control of) and the keywords it contains is seen highly in the eyes of most search engines, including Google, Yahoo, MSN and Ask Jeeves
If, for example, you run a toy model business called Models R Us Ltd specialising in model aircraft, model cars and model boats then a good example of a title would be:
Model Aircraft, Cars, Boats | Models R Us Ltd
This would be placed within your title tags.
Now notice we haven't duplicated the word Model to the words Cars and Boats. This is because we do not want to use our main keyword too many times in the title tag. Search engines can see this negatively, as this is a technique used by many unscrupulous spammers/optimisers to trick the search engines in to gaining better search engine placements. Some search engines do penalise sites for this now and can lower your search engine position.
Also we have removed any unnecessary words such as; the, was, it, at, as etc... We simply want to use the most relevant terms and phrases and de-clutter the title.
Your keywords, always placed at the beginning of the title, are to help search engines know which words are most relevant to your site. Secondly the name of your business is used so your website is displayed to anyone searching for your business.
Your main keyword/s should be appear ideally twice (three times very maximum) for optimum effect.
